People believed that getting even a small piece of the bride's dress brought enormous luck. Wedding guests would often literally lunge at the bride and tear pieces of her dress off her body. To distract the crowd and escape to safety, the bride would throw her bouquet among them."
Over time, this rather wild custom softened into today's elegant version — a symbolic handing over of the torch to the next "bride-to-be."
