When Do Peonies Bloom? The 2026 Season Is Short and Intense — Don't Miss It
Peonies (Paeonia) are a complete phenomenon in the flower world. As soon as the first buds appear in spring, a literal mania breaks out in flower shops and on social media. They're the most popular wedding flower, and quite possibly the most photogenic plant of all.
They do have one drawback — their season is extremely short. Unlike roses, which are available year-round, peonies are an exclusive affair of just a few weeks a year. At KvětinyExpres.cz, though, thanks to direct imports from Italy and the Netherlands, our season starts 14 to 21 days earlier than in Czech gardens.
The 2026 Peony Calendar: When Is the Right Time?
The retail season differs from what you see in flowerbeds. To make sure you don't miss any of it, follow this schedule:
Import season (sales start): mid-April – early May Thanks to imports from southern Europe, we start 3 weeks earlier. Already in the second half of April, you'll find the first pieces with us for your spring celebrations.
Peak season: May – mid-June The golden time for peonies. Blooms are largest, cheapest, and most fragrant. This is also when peonies bloom in the Czech Republic itself. It's the ideal time for Mother's Day bouquets.
Tail end of the season: late June – early July As the summer heat arrives, the season ends. By July, typical summer flowers have already taken the place of peonies.

How to Spot a Fresh Peony? (The Marshmallow Test)
Buying peonies as buds is a bit of a gamble. How do you know they'll actually open?

Gently squeeze the bud between your fingers.

If it's hard as a rock, the peony was cut too early and probably won't open.

If it feels soft, like a marshmallow, that's the ideal state, and it will unfurl beautifully at home.
Caring for Peonies: The Sticky-Bud Trick
Peonies secrete sweet nectar, which can "glue" the petals shut. If a bloom refuses to open, hold it under the tap and gently rinse the bud with lukewarm water. This washes off the sticky sugar, and the flower will bloom within a few hours. Remember that peonies drink a lot of water — top up the vase daily!
Growing Them in the Garden
Peonies are rewarding perennials that can stay in the same spot for up to 50 years. They need a sunny location and dislike being replanted often. If you grow them in your garden, you'll typically see them bloom 2–3 weeks later than in our online shop.
