Harmony in Your Home

Harmony in Your Home: How to Choose and Place Flowers According to Feng Shui

Do you long for a home that's not only beautiful to look at, but also one where you feel calm, balanced, and full of energy? The ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui teaches us how to arrange a space so that positive chi energy can flow through it freely.

One of the most powerful tools for achieving this is living houseplants. Forget complicated rules and rearranging furniture. We bring you a simple guide from our florists on how to turn your home into an oasis of calm using the right choice of plants.

Why Are Plants So Important in Feng Shui?

In Feng Shui philosophy, everything living carries energy. Houseplants are unique in this respect, because they bring movement and life into a static interior.

  1. The Wood element: Plants represent the wood element, which symbolizes growth, health, vitality, and new beginnings.

  2. Energy purifiers: Not only do they physically filter toxins from the air, they symbolically cleanse a room's energy of stagnation too.

  3. Growth and development: Because they actively grow and change, they bring dynamism into your home.

An important rule: According to Feng Shui, only living and healthy plants carry positive energy. Wilted, sick, or dried flowers represent stagnant or dead energy. If a plant of yours is struggling, try to nurse it back to health, or thank it and let it go.

Basic Rules for Choosing the "Right" Plant

Before you start thinking about a specific location, it helps to know what kinds of plants Feng Shui favors.

  1. Rounded, soft leaves: Plants with round, oval, or heart-shaped leaves (e.g. jade plant, ficus, Monstera) support a gentle, calm flow of energy. They're ideal for living spaces.

  2. Upward growth: Plants that grow primarily upward (e.g. orchid, Sansevieria, Zamioculcas) symbolize growth, success, and positive direction.

  3. Health and vitality: The most important rule. Always choose only healthy, strong, and well cared-for plants. A dried-out or dying plant brings negative energy into a space.

Plants for Harmony and Abundance

We've selected varieties for you that are a safe bet according to Feng Shui:

Where to Put Them? Placement Is Key

By placing plants correctly, you can activate different areas of your life (the so-called Bagua sectors).

1. The Entryway – Welcome the Energy

The front door is the "mouth of the house," through which all energy enters.

  • What to put here: Place a beautiful, impressive, and healthy plant here (e.g. a grown Zamioculcas or Monstera). It slows down the fast flow of energy coming in from outside and creates a sense of comfort right at the entrance.

2. The Wealth Area (Southeast)

This is the most popular Feng Shui application. The southeast corner of the living room (or of the whole apartment) is the sector of wealth and prosperity.

  • What to put here: Traditionally, this is where the jade plant (Crassula) belongs, whose leaves resemble coins, or any plant with round, fleshy leaves. It's known as the "Money Tree."

3. The Living Room – Family Happiness

This is where the family gathers, so here we want to support harmony and relationships.

  • What to put here: Choose plants with soft leaves that purify the air, such as a peace lily (Spathiphyllum) or a ficus. Avoid overly sharp, thorny plants here.

4. The Bedroom – With Feeling and Care

According to traditional Feng Shui, the bedroom should have as few plants as possible. Plants carry "yang" (active) growth energy, which can disturb calm "yin" sleep.

  • What to put here: If you can't be without greenery, choose at most one smaller plant, placed further from the bed (e.g. aloe vera, or an orchid, which is a symbol of love and partnership).

Which Plants Are Better Avoided?

Not all plants are harmonious for an interior. Some create so-called sha chi (sharp, cutting energy).

  • Cacti and thorns: Plants with sharp points create "defensive" energy. They aren't suitable for the living room or bedroom, since they can provoke arguments and tension.

    • Exception: They're great on an outdoor windowsill or by a computer, where they symbolically "deflect" negative influences from outside.

  • Bonsai: While beautiful, they represent artificially suppressed growth. In Feng Shui, this can symbolize stagnation in your career or personal development.

  • Dried flowers: They represent the past and a life that's gone out. For fresh energy, always choose living plants.

Conclusion: Trust Your Intuition

Working with flowers according to Feng Shui isn't dogma. It's about sensing a space. If you like a plant and it gives you a good feeling, it's probably in the right place. Even a single healthy plant, cared for with love, can work wonders for the atmosphere of your home.
