How-To: Making Your Own Herb Bouquet
If you feel like creating something, here's how to preserve a piece of summer for the whole winter.
1. Choosing the Material
The key is to pick plants that hold their shape even after drying.

Base (Frame): Yarrow (Achillea) with its big yellow flower heads, or goldenrod, is ideal. It forms a sturdy support.

Scent: The most important part. Add lavender (calming), oregano, thyme, sage, or mint.

Color: For a colorful accent, use strawflowers, nigella (its seed pods are gorgeous), tansy, or thistles.
2. Preparation and Binding
You can choose a round, spiral-bound bunch or a one-sided bouquet (for example, to hang on a wall).
Important tip from our florist: "Before you start binding, strip all the leaves off the lower part of the stems. Leaves don't look nice once dried – they crumble and make a mess. Let only the stems and flowers stand out."
3. The Drying Process

Tie the bouquet tightly with string (the stems will shrink in volume as they dry, so make sure the bundle won't fall apart).

Hang it flowers down.

Choose a dark, dry, and well-ventilated spot (such as an attic). Direct sunlight would draw the color out of the flowers and turn them gray.

The bouquet is perfectly dry in about one to two weeks.
