Growing Lavender in a Pot – A Piece of Provence on Your Balcony
Lavender isn't just a plant, it's an atmosphere. Its silvery leaves and purple blooms can turn an ordinary balcony into a Mediterranean terrace. Growing lavender in a pot is easy once you know how.
Whether you're looking for decoration or a calming herb, lavender is the obvious choice.

A Tip From Florist Andrea (Which One to Choose?):
"Watch out, not all lavender is the same! For balcony pots, I most recommend the Lavandula stoechas (Spanish/French lavender) variety. It has gorgeous large blooms with 'little wings' that look far more striking than classic garden lavender. Just watch out — you have to bring it indoors to a cool hallway for winter, it would freeze outside!"
Basic Rules: So It Keeps Bringing You Joy
1. Sun, Sun, and More Sun
Lavender is a child of the south. It needs at least 6–8 hours of direct sun a day.
-
Ideal: A south- or west-facing balcony.
-
A mistake: In shade it will bloom sparsely and stretch out toward the light.
2. Watering (Less Is More)
The most common cause of death for potted lavender is drowning.
-
How to water: Only once the soil is completely dry to the touch. In hot summer that might be every day, but be cautious in spring and autumn.
-
Drainage: The pot must have drainage holes! Excess water needs to drain away, otherwise the roots will rot.
3. Pruning (The Secret to a Dense Bush)
Don't be afraid to prune.
-
After blooming: Cut off the spent flower spikes (you can dry them).
-
In spring: A deeper cut to make the plant bushier. (But never cut into the old woody stems, which no longer sprout new leaves.)

Lavender in Winter: Outside or Inside?
It depends on the variety:
-
English lavender (Angustifolia): It's frost-hardy. In a pot, it's enough to wrap it in styrofoam or bubble wrap so the roots don't freeze through.
-
Spanish lavender (Stoechas): The one we sell most often as a decorative plant needs to be brought indoors before the frosts, into a bright, cool room (5–10°C).
