Even or Odd Number of Flowers?

Even or Odd Number of Flowers? Rules, Myths, and When Etiquette Steps Aside

A tip from owner and quality guarantor Monika: "This is our most common customer support question: Can I give an even number for a birthday? The answer is: Absolutely yes! For big celebrations and milestone birthdays (30, 40, 50), funeral etiquette goes completely out the window. If a woman is celebrating her 50th birthday, a huge bouquet of 50 roses in our top Dutch A1 quality is the most beautiful gesture there is. And with tied mixed bouquets, stems aren't even counted at all — what matters there is perfect design and volume. Just pick the most beautiful one, and we'll take care of getting it to you in 100% condition."

Choose an exact number: Use our bouquet by number of roses service and give exactly as many flowers as the years your loved one is celebrating.
Reliable Airway delivery: Our flowers never travel dry in a box. We transport them in our own refrigerated vehicles, always safely standing in water.
A message FREE of charge: Whatever the number of flowers, we'll print your personal dedication on a gift card for free.

Even or odd number of flowers

The Golden Rule for Even and Odd Numbers (Up to 10 Flowers)

You're standing in a flower shop or clicking through an online store, mentally counting stems. In Czech and Central European tradition, fairly clear rules apply to smaller bouquets of up to ten stems:

  • Odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9): Mean joy, celebration, and life. We give these for a name day, out of love, or as a nice gesture on a first date.

  • Even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8): Mean mourning and remembrance.

A Word From Jana, Our Funeral Arrangement Specialist:

"An even number is traditionally reserved in our culture for funeral bouquets and wreaths. Superstition says an even number is given to the deceased so they 'won't be alone.' At KvětinyExpres we approach these difficult moments with the utmost sensitivity — we reliably deliver funeral bouquets directly to the ceremonial hall, and we provide professional printing of funeral ribbons completely free of charge."

When Does the Even-Number Rule NOT Apply? (Important Before You Buy!)

This is where most etiquette mistakes happen. There are situations where you actually should, or can, give an even number, and it has nothing to do with a funeral gesture at all.

1. Birthdays and Anniversaries

As Monika already mentioned, the symbolism of an age reached, or years spent married, is far stronger than old superstitions. No one will be offended receiving a bouquet of 50 roses for their 50th birthday. On the contrary, it's a magnificent gesture! The same goes for 10 roses for a 10th wedding anniversary.

2. Large Bouquets and Tied Arrangements

Once a bouquet passes a certain volume (typically 10–12 stems), the human eye stops counting. In a lush, natural meadow-style arrangement from our florist Andrea, no one is checking whether there's one stem more or less.

A trend perspective from florist Bára: "In the US and Western Europe, it's completely common to give a romantic dozen roses (12 pcs) as a symbol of perfect love. This trend is slowly but surely making its way to us, so you definitely don't need to be afraid of 12 roses."

The Symbolism of Numbers: What Are You Saying With an Exact Number of Roses?

If you give roses on their own, their number can carry a beautiful hidden message:

  • 1 rose: "You're the only one." (Or an elegant gesture on a date.)

  • 3 roses: The classic expression of "I love you."

  • 9 roses: Symbolizes eternal love (we'll be together forever).

  • 10 roses: "You're absolutely perfect" (10 out of 10).

  • 100 roses: Absolute devotion and a breathtaking "wow factor" that won't be forgotten for a lifetime.

The bottom line: Follow your heart, not a calculator. For smaller bouquets, choose an odd number; for anniversaries, choose the exact number. Our KvětinyExpres.cz team will happily tie exactly as many stems as you'd like from fresh Dutch flowers.
