How to Write an Obituary Notice: A Template, Verses, and Etiquette
An obituary notice, commonly known in Czech as a parte, is the final written record of a person's life. It's a formal yet painful duty that awaits the bereaved in the first days after a loss. You often ask us what it should contain, which verses to choose, or how to announce that the funeral will be held within a close family circle.
We've put together a sensitive guide to help you find the right words at a difficult time.
What must an obituary notice include?
A parte follows certain established conventions. Whether you choose classic paper with a black border or a digital version, these 4 elements shouldn't be missing:
-
A motto or verse: Usually placed in the upper left corner or beneath the name. It sets the tone for the whole notice.
-
The deceased's personal details: First and last name (for women, the maiden name if applicable), titles, and dates of birth and death.
-
Funeral information: An absolutely essential part. It must clearly state where, when, and at what time the service will take place.
-
A list of the bereaved: At the bottom, the names of the closest relatives are listed.

Not sure how to phrase it? Choose one of the most common variations.
Variation A: A Traditional Service
"With deep sorrow in our hearts, we announce to all relatives, friends, and acquaintances that our beloved...
John Smith
...has left us forever, passing peacefully on August 10, 2026, at the age of 79.
The final farewell will take place on Friday, August 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM, in the Great Ceremonial Hall of the Strašnice Crematorium.
On behalf of the bereaved: ..."
Variation B: A Farewell Within the Close Family Circle
"With pain in our hearts, we announce that we have lost...
Jane Smith
At the deceased's own wish, the final farewell took place quietly, within the close family circle.
We thank everyone who holds her in a quiet moment of remembrance."
Which funeral verses should you choose?
A verse should reflect the personality of the deceased. Were they a person of faith, a nature lover, or a realist?
"They are gone, but they live on in our hearts."
"Whoever lives on in our hearts never truly dies."
"You loved the forest and nature, and in it you wished for your eternal rest."

Examples of Funeral Flowers: What's Appropriate to Choose?
Flowers are the final farewell gift. But the bereaved are often unsure which type of arrangement to choose. In our Funeral Bouquets and Wreaths category, you'll find our full selection.
Funeral bouquets: These have a special flat shape so they can lie in front of the coffin or on the floor (you can read more in our article on the rules for funeral bouquets).
Funeral wreaths: A traditional choice from family. A final message is written on the ribbon.
Tip: Not sure what to write on the wreath ribbon? Take a look at our articles Inscriptions for Funeral Ribbons or our detailed guide How to Properly Phrase the Text on a Ribbon.

Etiquette: When and How to Send a Parte?
The boundaries may be shifting these days, but good manners remain.
-
When to send it: Ideally right after you've set the funeral date with the funeral home.
-
Paper vs. email: For the closest family and older relatives, it's proper etiquette to deliver the notice in person or by post. Friends and colleagues can be notified electronically.
-
What comes after the funeral? A wake and words of thanks often follow. If you'll also need to give a eulogy over the coffin or at the gathering, our article How to Write a Eulogy or our specific Short Eulogy Template might come in handy.
What to Write About Flowers on the Notice?
If the family has a specific wish regarding flower gifts, it's appropriate to note it in small print at the bottom of the notice:
-
"We accept cut flower gifts only." (If there's no room for wreaths)
-
"In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to [Name of hospice/organization]."
Writing an obituary notice isn't just a formality – it's the first step toward coming to terms with loss. We wish you strength in these moments. We'll take care of at least one thing: making sure the flower arrangements are dignified and worry-free.
