When to Buy Which Plant? A Seasonal Calendar

A Calendar for Indoor and Outdoor Plants: What Blooms and When to Buy It

Every plant has its moment. While we want the living room green all year round, the balcony changes with the seasons. When's the best time to buy geraniums so they don't freeze? And when are orchids at their most beautiful?

We've put together a year-round guide based on what's in the best shape right now and what you're searching for most.

WINTER (December – February)

A quiet time outdoors, but the main season for flowering houseplants.

Houseplants (Indoors)

In winter we spend time at home and want color.

  • Poinsettia: [December] The absolute queen of Christmas.

  • Cyclamen: [January] Loves cool windowsills.

  • Amaryllis: [January–February] Forced bulbs put on a show right in the middle of winter.

Pick your winter beauty (in stock):

Outdoor and Balcony

Only frost-hardy species survive on the balcony.

  • Conifer boughs and Ilex: A staple for window boxes.

  • Winter heath (Erica): Flowers even under snow.

Tip from florist Monika: "Never buy houseplants from outdoor stalls in winter! They'll freeze on the way home. Use our warm delivery instead (Airway)."

SPRING (March – May)

Nature wakes up. Time for repotting and the first colors.

Houseplants

  • Orchids (Phalaenopsis): [March] The best time to buy — they're just putting out flowers.

  • Potted bulbs: [March–April] Hyacinths and daffodils bring spring into the apartment.

  • Green houseplants: [April] The ideal time to buy a Monstera or a Ficus.

Spring inspiration for your home:

Outdoor and Balcony

  • Pansies and primroses: [March] The first brave ones for window boxes.

  • Geraniums and petunias: [May] Careful! Only buy them after the "Ice Saints" (the mid-May cold snap).

SUMMER (June – August)

A time of sun, warmth, and vacations.

Houseplants

  • Succulents and Cacti: [July] They love sun and warmth. The ideal time to buy a jade plant or aloe vera.

  • Anthurium: [August] A tropical plant that thrives in summer humidity.

Outdoor and Balcony

  • Lavender: [June–July] Peak season. Scents up the whole terrace.

  • Herbs: Mint, basil, rosemary for grilling.

  • Hydrangeas: [July] The queens of shady terraces.

AUTUMN (September – November)

Coming back home, getting cozy.

Houseplants

  • Snake Plant: [October] A plant that handles fading light just fine.

  • Ficus: [November] A big statement tree for indoors.

Outdoor and Balcony

  • Chrysanthemums: [September–October] The symbol of autumn.

  • Heather (Calluna): [October] A classic for autumn window boxes.
