Regal Lily – A Symbol of Purity

The lily, known for its gorgeous looks and intoxicating scent, is more than just a flower. It's the queen among cut flowers. It's a symbol of purity, innocence, and love, used at joyful weddings as well as for dignified farewells at funerals.

Tip From Florist Bára (Design and Care):

"Lilies are gorgeous, but customers often worry about pollen staining their clothes. I have a simple trick for you: remove the pollen from the flowers before the anthers mature and burst open (turn yellow). Just pull them off with your fingers or snip them off with scissors as soon as the flower opens. And if pollen has already spilled onto a tablecloth, never clean it with water! Just blow it off, or 'catch' it with sticky tape."

Lilies in History and Mythology

In the Christian world, the white lily (Lilium candidum) is a mark of purity and innocence, which is exactly why it's inseparably linked to the Virgin Mary. But its symbolism reaches much further back.

  • The earliest records: The oldest depictions of lilies come from the Minoan civilization on Crete (frescoes 3,600 years old).

  • Greek mythology: The lily's name comes from a legend about the goddess Hera. The myth says lilies sprang up wherever drops of the goddess's breast milk fell to the ground.

  • Traditional medicine: In ancient times, lilies were used for both cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Crushed bulbs helped treat infections, and leaves mixed with honey served as an anti-wrinkle cream.

Appearance and Characteristics: How to Recognize Quality?

The regal lily is a majestic plant with tall stems (1.2–1.5 m).

  • The bloom: Bell-shaped flowers come in a palette ranging from snow white through rich pink and orange to deep red.

  • Symbolism:

The Different Types of Lilies (What Will You Find at a Flower Shop?)

There are more than 100 varieties on the market. For customers, the important distinctions are mainly between these types:

  1. Asiatic lilies (AZ): The most common type. They have smaller blooms, vibrant colors, but no scent. Suitable for allergy sufferers.

  2. Oriental lilies (OR): The queens of fragrance. They have huge blooms and a very intense scent.

  3. Longiflorum (LF): The so-called "church lily," with long white trumpets.

  4. Oriental-Trumpet (OT): Modern hybrids with giant blooms and a long vase life.

Growing and Caring for Cut Lilies

Whether you have lilies in your garden or in a vase, they need a bit of attention.

  • In a vase: Trim the stems with an angled cut. Remove any leaves that would sit underwater (they'd rot). Change the water every 2 days.

  • In the garden: Lilies prefer "head in the sun, feet in the shade." Plant them in well-draining soil and protect the bulbs from waterlogging.
