Peonies are among the most beautiful spring flowers. Their huge, fluffy blooms and intoxicating sweet scent are a symbol of luxury, romance, and prosperity. That's also why they're the most popular flower for wedding bouquets.
They have just one flaw: their season is short (mainly May and June). But that only makes them more precious.

Tip from florist Monika (Buying and Care):
"Peonies often arrive as 'hard little balls.' Don't worry about that! It's a sign of freshness. My trick for helping them open up? Put them in lukewarm water (not ice-cold) and gently rub the bud between your fingers – as if wiping away that invisible, sticky honey-like film on the surface. By the next day, they'll put on a show and triple in size."
The Most Popular Variety: Sarah Bernhardt
Among hundreds of varieties, one queen rules them all – Sarah Bernhardt (Paeonia lactiflora). It's prized for its soft pink color, full blooms (they look like a whipped-cream cake), and wonderful fragrance.
Our tip: In season, we also source this variety from Czech growers in Moravia. They're fresher and more fragrant than imported ones.
How to Care for Cut Peonies in a Vase?
To keep them bringing you joy for as long as possible (up to a week):
Cutting: Trim the stems with an angled cut.
Leaves: Strip off any leaves that would sit in the water. Peonies have a lot of foliage, which saps the water's strength and causes rot.
Water: Peonies drink a lot! Fill the vase to two-thirds and top up the water every day.
Placement: Don't place them in direct sunlight, or they'll bloom and fade within 2 days. They'll last longer somewhere cool.

Types of Peonies

Herbaceous: Classic perennials that die back in winter. (e.g. Paeonia lactiflora).

Tree peonies: Woody shrubs that bloom earlier (April/May).

Itoh (hybrids): The best of both worlds.
When and How to Plant?

When: Ideally in autumn (September–October). Spring planting delays flowering.

Where: A sunny spot (at least 5–6 hours of sun).

Depth: Careful! The eyes (buds) should sit only 3–5 cm below the soil. If you plant them deeper, you'll get leaves but no flowers.
